Kindergarten ‘Abschiedsfeier’ in Germany – Ella’s Farewell Party

Wondering how to prepare for your child’s Kindergarten ‘Abschiedsfeier’ in Germany? Here is my experience and everything I and the other mothers in the group put together for this occasion.

On Friday, we celebrated Ella’s last day in her Kindergarten. It was a bitter-sweet moment with lots of tear-jerking moments especially when the children and their teachers put their wishes for their school-life into a tiny flame! It was the sweetest thing ever.

Ella’s wishes for her school life were the following:

  • Eine intelligente Ärztin sein. (to be an intelligent Doctor)
  • Marienkäfer spielzeuge. (Ladybug toys)
  • Schnell wie ein Superheld. (Swift like a Superhero)
  • Schaukel und Rutsche in meinem Garten. (Swing and Slide in my garden)
  • Stark sein Mama zu helfen. (to be strong to help Mamma)
  • Eine kleine Hase, die heisst Schneeflockchen. (A small rabbit called Snowflake)

I wish that all her wishes come true! We listened to all the kids talk about their wishes and it was so moving.

Kindergarten ‘Abschiedsfeier’ in Germany is usually huge with atleast 20-25 children. Due to the current situation this was reduced to just the kids who were leaving, in our case eight. We were just grateful that we could do this in any form this year!

I decided to make goodie bags for all the children. This isn’t usual, but I decided to do it because I couldn’t make these for Ella’s birthday this year because of the lockdown. The children were so thrilled to receive these!

Things that I included:

  • Ladybug stickers (because that is what Ella is obsessed at the moment)
  • Temporary tattoos.
  • Fridge Magnet with their group photo. I did this at the local DM Markt, https://www.fotoparadies.de/fotogeschenke/fotomagnete.html
  • Zip Lights
  • Leibniz Pick-Up
  • Haribo Gummy bears
  • Maqam candy
  • and more chocolate.
  • Cards I made with Cardstock.

The winner in the goodie-bag was these ‘Zip-lights’ which are blinking lights that can be attached to the zip of one’s jacket or school bag. They are meant to be used by the kids when they are walking on the road in the dark. The blinking light will make the child more visible and ensures road safety. It was a favorite because I managed to find each child’s name and the kids absolutely loved it!

Other Mammas in the group made these gorgeous gifts for the teachers which included a pillow sewed with the kids handprints and a card out of the children’s drawings. Any guesses for which one was Ella’s?

Another Kindergarten tradition is to pass around a ‘Freundebuch’ or a Slam-book. Since we didn’t have time to do this I decided to DIY. I made prints that I could give to the kids, so that they could fill it up and return in time before schools and kindergartens close for Summer.

As you can expect, it is UNICORN-themed because Ella loves it!

I designed this Unicorn Themed Freundebuch for the Kindergarten Abschiedsfeier and printed color copies at DM and then distributed it to all the children. Once they return it, I will be putting it in a Unicorn file.

And that’s all folks! It was worth all the work I put in and more! The children were so happy!
